What storms do to roofs
Hail damage and wind damage look different
Both can shorten the life of a roof, even when nothing is leaking yet. Here’s what we look for.
Signs of hail damage
- Dark, soft “bruises” where impacts knocked granules off the shingle
- Cracked or split shingles, sometimes with the mat showing
- Granules washing out of downspouts after the storm
- Dents in gutters, vents, downspouts and metal flashing, which help confirm hail size
Signs of wind damage
- Missing shingles, or shingles found in the yard
- Creased tabs that were lifted and folded back by the wind
- Broken seal strips, so shingles lift when the wind blows
- Loose ridge caps or damage along roof edges
Stay off the roof
Storm-damaged roofs can be slippery and unstable. Check from the ground: look for shingles in the yard, dents in gutters or the AC unit, and granules at downspouts. Take photos and note the date of the storm.

Storm damage questions
Storm damage FAQ
Yes. Hail bruises and lost granules often don’t leak right away, but they expose the shingle to sun and water and shorten its life. That’s why an inspection after a major storm is worthwhile even without a leak.
Many homeowners get an inspection first so they know whether there’s real damage before filing. Your policy may require prompt notice of a loss, so don’t wait long. Check your policy or ask your agent about deadlines.
We can review the adjuster’s report against what we find on the roof. In some cases homeowners have asked their insurer for a re-inspection, and we can be there for it. The final decision is always your insurance company’s.
No. Texas House Bill 2102 (2019) made it illegal for contractors to waive, absorb or rebate an insured’s deductible. We follow the law and will be upfront about it.
